Ode to snail (paper) mail

The mail art network often is called 'the eternal network'.
Sometimes, when I am reading that post offices are closing worldwide, when hearing that the number of delivering days a week are decreasing, as well as home delivering in some places,
sometimes, when we see that postage rates increase, while working conditions for postal workers are deteriorating, and things like that, I am wondering for how long the analogue, paper network will keep on going.

Meanwhile all my received paper mail art survived so far. While in contrary much digital art may not survive eternally, for example because of change of email addresses, computer crashes, or change of website owners etcetera.

These thoughts, and the Mail Pigeon, I am sending to Ryosuke Cohen in Japan. Thanks to his connecting Brain Cell project, to my opinion he is one of the masters of the Eternal universe Network.

Dieren tekenen vind ik erg leuk, en ik hou er ook van om voor mensen hun favoriete dier te tekenen. Dus toen Kerosene desgevraagd antwoordde dat een zwarte panter ooit haar favoriet was, kwam bovenstaande uit mijn pen en penseel rollen. Misschien toch niet de panter die zij bedoeld had?!?

I love to draw animals, and I like to draw people's favourite animal. So when I asked and Kerosene answered that the black panter used to be her favourite, this black panter appeared on my paper. It might not be the one she meant?!?

Rubber Stamp Archive (TAM)

Een typisch onderdeel van mail art wat me erg kan bekoren, is het fenomeen 'stempels'. Je kunt ze ontwerpen en vervolgens professioneel laten maken, of zelf uit gummetjes snijden.

One of the characteristics of mail art I like a lot, is the phenomena 'rubber stamps'. You can design them and have them made professionally by companies, or you can carve them out of erasers.



Al sinds 1983 beheert Ruud Janssen het TAM Rubber Stamp Archive.
Een aantal maanden geleden ontving ook ik een uitnodiging, in de vorm van blanco stempelvellen, om mijn stempels op af te drukken voor het TAM stempelarchief. Inmiddels zijn m'n oudere eigen stempels gearchiveerd. En intussen ontving ik 'collage' stempelvellen, met de bedoeling er een gezamenlijk kunstwerk van te maken. Dat uiteindelijk dan weer naar Ruud's Stempelarchief teruggestuurd moet worden. Daarop kon ik mooi m'n nieuwe stempels kwijt. Dus, "E" (en anderen), daar komt-ie!

In 1983 Ruud Janssen founded the TAM Rubber Stamp Archive.
Some months ago also I was invited to add my stamps to the archive: I received blanc stamp sheets which I could print my own stamps to and then return. So most of my elder rubberstamps have been archivated now.
Meanwhile Ruud sent me blanc collage sheets, to add my stamps to, and to pass these stamped sheets on to other mail artists, who then can add and return the completed version to Ruud's Rubber Stamp Archive. Above you see few new - handcarved - rubber stamps, and one of the collage sheets (alors "E", s'il vous plaît!).

Zo kleurrijk als de adreszijde is ('Life is what happens while you are planning to plan' - geweldige vondst!), zo rustig is de achterkant.

Comparing the colourful frontside to the quiet backside, the contrast is amazingly high.

Met op de ommezijde een mooie stempel (en goedkeuring door de IUOMA).

IUOMA

Over 'Mail Art' is van alles gepubliceerd. Om meer te weten te komen over de achtergronden van de IUOMA (de International Union Of Mail-Artists) en over Mail Art, geeft dit - zwart-wit geïllustreerde - 165 pagina's tellende boek een aardig overzicht.

There has been written a lot about Mail Art. To know more about the IUOMA (the International Union Of Mail-Artists) and about Mail Art, this 165 pages long b&w booklet gives a nice overview.



Na lezing kon ik niet anders dan fan worden!
En met ingang van vandaag ben ik ook aangesteld als creatief adviseur van de IUOMA.

After reading this I couldn't do anything else than becoming a Fan!
And since today my new title is Creative Advisor of the IUOMA.

Yes, I became member of the famous IUOMA, and yes, it indeed is a great network: due to the IUOMA I got mails from colleagues I possibly otherwise wouldn't ever have met.

And I received a e-mail from a friendly person from overseas, who told he didn't pass the stringent criteria to become a IUOMA member. Of course this caused many feelings of compassion, and as I gathered that this kind person likes to talk, likes words, this work came out of my pen to be send to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
