I created it in 2016, then lost the envelope somewhere between other papers in my piles/files, found it again today and won't wait any longer to send it :-)

Een van de dragers van het wapenschild van het United Queendom of Retailia, nu als postzegel. Gemaakt als antwoord op de mail art (inclusief landkaart) die Mail Art Martha me stuurde.

Spool knit snail mail snail

Een maand of wat geleden herontdekte ik het punniken. Vervolgens afgelopen september toevallig een workshop punniken (en stempels snijden) gegeven. Ter voorbereiding zocht ik extra punnikklosjes, en vond tot mijn blijde verrassing bij een (web)winkel in Bergen NH zelfs klosjes met zes, respectievelijk acht haakjes, in plaats van de gebruikelijk vier-op-een-paddenstoel.
Helaas hebben ze tegenwoordig niet meer die houten garenklosjes, waarvan je zèlf een punnikklosje kan maken. Maar inmiddels heb ik toch een punnikklos geproduceerd: van een wc-rol, versierd met kadopapier, en zeven ijslollystokjes.

Na gepunnikte vlinders, een bloem, en draad, heel veel punnikdraad, werd het hoog tijd voor een Postslak.
Deze eerste - gemaakt met het zes-haakjes-klosje - gaat naar Suus in Mokum.

Some months ago I rediscovered spool knitting. I made several cords as a child. Since then it has been many years before starting again - even though I'm having spool knit spools at home already for years.
I even discovered there are spools with 6 or 8 nails instead of the usual 4. I remember how, as a child, we made spools out of real thread spools. Alas the thread spools which are used nowadays aren't suitable to make knit spools of.

After spool-knitting butterflies, a flower and lots of cords, the Snail Mail Snail suddenly was there!
This first snail has been sent to Suus in Mokum. More snails will follow.

Het thema van 'Mail a Smile' van vorige maand was 'het favoriete boek uit je kindertijd'.
De brief voor de Koning van Tonke Dragt las ik zo rond m'n 12e. En herlas ik twee jaar geleden, en het blijft een prachtig boek. Over vriendschap, over moed, authenticiteit en twijfel, over loyaliteit en rivaliteit. Kortom: over de mens.
Bovenstaande illustratie heb ik nagetekend van de voorkant van 'onze' versie (het boek dat ik las in de jaren zeventig), inmiddels zijn er nieuwe uitgaven verschenen met nieuwe omslagontwerpen. Pas na vele jaren kwam ik er achter dat Tonke Dragt niet alleen het prachtige verhaal had geschreven, maar ook zelf de tot de verbeelding sprekende illustraties gemaakt heeft.

The Mail a Smile challenge of July was 'Your favorite childhood book'.
The letter for the King by Tonke Dragt I read when I was about 12 years old. I re-read it two years ago, and still think it a wonderful book. About friendship, about courage, authenticity and uncertainty, about loyalty and rivalry. In brief: about human.
The illustration above I drew after the cover of the first version we had (which I read in the seventies). Not before many years later I learned that Tonke Dragt not only had written this beautiful story, but that she also has made the imagination-capturing illustrations to the book.

Oranje-turkooise vuurtorens

Ik zoek en vind graag bestaande vuurtoren-kaarten, om die te sturen naar de mensen die deze kaarten extra waarderen. Zoals Ravindra in Sri Lanka, en Eva.
Maar, heel soms moet ik er een maken. Omdat de gewenste kleur niet voor het oprapen ligt, of zo.

I love to find existing lighthouse postcards, to send them to people who like these cards more than usual. Like Ravindra in Sri Lanka, and of course Eva.
But, very occasionally, I have to make one. For instance when the desired colours aren't available, and so.



Gemaakt voor en gestuurd naar Eva. En ik moet jullie toch ook de brievenbus laten zien, waar ik 'm deze keer gepost heb! De postbode was al paraat.

Made for and sent to Eva. And I simply HAVE to show you the mailbox I've put this mail into this time! The postman already was waiting to pick up the mail to deliver.

Snail Mail Snail - nieuwe postslak

Enkele post-slakken die ik ontwierp liet ik via een bedrijf in stempels omtoveren (zoals deze slak en deze). Maar 't is minstens zo leuk om de slakkenstempel zelf uit een gum te snijden. En nog leuker is het om dat gezellig samen met anderen te doen.
Zodoende kwam ik vorige week terecht op een workshop 'stempels snijden' bij Studio Collage. Het resultaat zie je hierboven, gefotografeerd door Tedje van Erck van Studio Collage.
Zij gebruikt overigens ook stempels voor sieraden (duurzame kunst, gemaakt van fietsbinnenbanden) en voor andere gebruiksvoorwerpen, zie ook deze website.
Een heel mooi gemaakte gum-stempel van haar hand vind ik deze hart-puzzel.

I already had designed some snail mail snails to have them turn into rubber stamps by an official company (like this mail snail and this one).
But it's more fun to carve rubberstamps by ourselves, isn't it?
And even more fun it is to create eraser/rubber stamps in a room shared with other creative people.
That way I ended up at a Stamp carving workshop at Studio Collage. The result you see above, pictured by Tedje van Erck of Studio Collage.
By the way, she uses rubberstamps to make other articles of everyday use. Among them jewellery out of the inner tyres of bicycles. See also this website.
And I think this rubberstamp she carved great, this heart-puzzle.

Mail a Smile Challenge #2

Vorige maand deed ik voor 't eerst mee aan het 'Stuur een glimlach' mail art project. Het tweede onderwerp is 'Een kop thee of koffie', gekozen door Eva. Hierboven een vilten kopje thee (met echte, geurige thee erachter, de techniek is nog niet zo ver dat ik die essence ook kan publiceren!). Hieronder thee- èn koffiekopjes, en daaronder een collage van de postzegels.
Nog drie dagen te gaan; wil je ook meedoen en Micu's Moeder een hart onder de riem steken, meld je snel aan bij Mail a Smile!



Last month I participated in the first Mail a Smile challenge. The second challenge's theme is 'A cup of tea or coffee', chosen by Eva.
Above on top you see a felt cup of tea (with real tea bags behind it; computer technology hasn't developed that far yet: I cannot publish the smell of tea!).
Just above some tea and coffee cups, and below you see a collage of the stamps I made / sticked.

Woodland Animals

Dankzij Eva ontdekte ik een nieuw mail art project: 'Stuur een glimlach'!
Bedacht door Micu uit Boedapest en Jennie uit Stockholm, met als doel om mensen in nood een glimlach te bezorgen, door ook zelf creatief bezig te zijn met envelop en brief (of kaart, in mijn geval).

Thanks to Eva I discovered a new mail art project: 'Mail a Smile'!
It was started by Micu from Budapest (Hungary) and Jennie from Stockholm (Sweden), with the aim to send smiles to people in need, by being creative ourselves by decorating envelopes and letters (or a card, in my case).



Je kan zelf een glimlach bedenken, of je laten inspireren door een bepaald thema, deze keer 'Woodland animals'. Wat ik in eerste instantie vertaalde als diertjes die in hout leven, maar na wat googlen bedacht ik dat het gewoon bosdieren zullen zijn.

You can think of a 'smile' piece of mail art, or, better, have yourself inspired by the actual theme. The theme of the first 'challenge' is Woodland Animals. I first thought that it would mean 'animals living in wood', but later I realized that these might be all animals living in the woods (forest, 'bos' in Dutch). So I'll send this one, too.

Added to and returned (1)

In de afgelopen paar jaar ontving ik verschillende 'add and return' kunstwerken. Ik loop helaas flink achter met beantwoorden, maar hopelijk lukt het de komende tijd dat alsnog te doen. Boven- en onderstaande is in ieder geval op de bus gedaan.
Van Laura Daniels uit Engeland ontving ik mooie mail art, met de vraag om 'toe te voegen en door te sturen' (terugsturen, werd het). Het grappige van 'add and return' mail art is dat ik niet altijd weet wáár ik precies iets aan moet toevoegen ('t zou best kunnen dat het aan een van de andere attributen in de envelop had gemoeten). Maar goed, dat is de vrijheid van de kunstenaar, natuurlijk.

In the past years I received several nice add-and-return-to mail art. And I must apologize that I am very much behind in adding and returning... I'll try to add-to and return asap, but to the people who are waiting for my reply (like E [Cavellini], Adamandia [tv-screen], Koos de Jonge [art book], Amuldo [folded booklet] and Lubomyr [Stamps Heart]): please have a little - or a lot - more patience!..

The funny thing of add-and-return mail (or add and pass on, in this case, Laura's request was) is that I don't always know which part(s) to add to.

Many months ago I received mail art from Laura Daniels from the UK: two nice drawings and some other pieces (which might have been the ones to add-to?!?).
However, I choose to stick one of the two drawings completely to a larger blue piece of paper, to which I added a drawing (a drawing which I never would have been able to create without the inspiration of Laura's mailed art!). And in addition I drew some copies of the, er, balloons, flowers?, from Laura's other design on the envelope.

An other add-and-return-to/pass-on project is Ruud Janssen's 'stamp collage' project for the TAM rubberstamp archive. I stamped these to add them to my mail for Laura. Looking forward to knowing what wil be added to these!

Rubber Stamp Archive (TAM)

Een typisch onderdeel van mail art wat me erg kan bekoren, is het fenomeen 'stempels'. Je kunt ze ontwerpen en vervolgens professioneel laten maken, of zelf uit gummetjes snijden.

One of the characteristics of mail art I like a lot, is the phenomena 'rubber stamps'. You can design them and have them made professionally by companies, or you can carve them out of erasers.



Al sinds 1983 beheert Ruud Janssen het TAM Rubber Stamp Archive.
Een aantal maanden geleden ontving ook ik een uitnodiging, in de vorm van blanco stempelvellen, om mijn stempels op af te drukken voor het TAM stempelarchief. Inmiddels zijn m'n oudere eigen stempels gearchiveerd. En intussen ontving ik 'collage' stempelvellen, met de bedoeling er een gezamenlijk kunstwerk van te maken. Dat uiteindelijk dan weer naar Ruud's Stempelarchief teruggestuurd moet worden. Daarop kon ik mooi m'n nieuwe stempels kwijt. Dus, "E" (en anderen), daar komt-ie!

In 1983 Ruud Janssen founded the TAM Rubber Stamp Archive.
Some months ago also I was invited to add my stamps to the archive: I received blanc stamp sheets which I could print my own stamps to and then return. So most of my elder rubberstamps have been archivated now.
Meanwhile Ruud sent me blanc collage sheets, to add my stamps to, and to pass these stamped sheets on to other mail artists, who then can add and return the completed version to Ruud's Rubber Stamp Archive. Above you see few new - handcarved - rubber stamps, and one of the collage sheets (alors "E", s'il vous plaît!).

New rubber stamp & postage

Enige tijd geleden ontdekte ik een firma die zwart-wit tekeningen kan omzetten in stempels. Handig voor ontwerpen die te priegelig zijn om uit een gummetje te snijden. Ik ben dan ook blij met deze tweede 'snail mail' stempel.

De gefrankeerde postzegel is trouwens een pleidooi om de postbode te behouden. Door de concurrentie, niet alleen van andere postbedrijven maar ongetwijfeld ook van e-mail en internet, lopen veel postbodes het gevaar ontslagen te worden, sommigen na tientallen jaren trouwe dienst..
Een extra reden om snail mail - en mail art - te koesteren!

Some time ago I discovered a company by which you can have your black-and-white drawings turn into rubber stamps.
Very handy when your design is too tiny to carve out of an eraser. So I'm happy with my second 'snail mail' rubber stamp!

The postage stamp shows a plea to keep the postmen. Not only by competition of other mail companies but without doubt also by the introduction of e-mail and the internet many postmen will be dismissed, some after decades of dedicated work.
An extra reason to cherish snail mail and mail art!
