FeMailed Artist and Scientist

Recently I was invited to join the 'Femail-XX' mail art project about female art and science.



I chose to draw this illustration, in honour of Maria Sibylla Merian (Frankfurt am Main, Germany, 1647 - Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1717). As an artist and scientist, Merian has played an important, be it not so well-known, role in natural history and biology.
Did you know that there were times that people thought butterflies arose spontaneously from mud and dirt? For us it is so obvious that butterflies originate from eggs. However, not until Merian's era people got little by little aware of the connection between butterflies, caterpillars and eggs. And Maria Sibylla Merian was one of the very first to research and draw these species and their metamorphosis. And the very first to add the hosting plants to her insect illustrations.
At older age (as old as I am now) she even traveled by boat to the tropics, a 2 months journey, to Suriname. There she researched more butterflies and other insects, and she has published beautiful, and scientifically seen correct, illustrations of the insects and all stages and surrounding vegetation.

This not so correct drawing is just a small honour to a woman who deserves a high place in natural and art history.



The mail art project's full name is Women Art Scientist Testament Exploration. I couldn't resist the urge to change 'waste' into the well-known female item 'waist'.

Time to send Butterflies!

It is summer now, here, with temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius, and the butterflies fly.
Time to send two of them into the world.

The Vanessa Atalanta (Red Admiral) will travel overseas, to the USA, and the Lemon butterfly will go to Hungary.
Have a safe travel, the two of you!

Multilingual Vlinder

Het woord 'vlinder' is in veel talen totaal anders. Erg interessant, volgens mij, vandaar deze multilinguale versie.
Gemaakt voor Gin, oprichtster van de IUOMA-groep 'Verenigde Veeltaligen' en net als ik (en meer mensen) taal-liefhebber.

The word 'butterfly' is varying a lot when translated. I think it interesting how this insect is called in various languages. So that's why this multilingual butterfly appeared.
Made for Gin, founder of the IUOMA group 'Polyglots United', and language lover (as I and more people are).

Flying Butterflies and Birds and Mail

'Vliegende vlinders en vogels en post'. Alweer 'n tijd geleden begon ik aan deze tekening. Pas nu kwam het er eindelijk van 'm af te maken, en naar Suus in Mokum te sturen.
Buiten begint de herfst, en ineens zag ik in mijn ooghoeken ronddwarrelende blaadjes op deze tekening, maar nee, ik tekende toch echt fladderende zomervlinders :-)

'Flying butterflies and birds and mail'. Already some time ago I started to create this one. Not before now I'm having some time to finish it and to send it to Suus in Mokum.
Outside autumn has reached our country, and suddenly I imagined I had drawn flitting leaves, but no, they still are fluttering summer butterflies :-)

Geïnspireerd door Katerina's gele vlinders op Brain Cell 855 voegde ik gele vlinders toe aan deze 'Zangvogel in boom'. (In het echt zijn ze geel, maar de scanner maakte ze ineens oranje...)
Verzonden naar Katerina in Griekenland.

Inspired by Katerina's yellow butterflies on Brain Cell 855, I added yellow butterflies to this 'Songbird in tree'. (In real the butterflies are really yellow, but the scanner somehow made them orange...)

Il n'y a qu'un timbre qui nous sépare

Een mooie verrassing ontving ik van Nicole Eippers uit België. Zij stuurde me al eerder prachtige wonderlijke bestaande dieren. En nu deze eerste-dag-envelop, met een koninginnenpage! En natuurlijk de onvolprezen 'Flying Pig' zegel erop. En binnenin deze envelop...

A beautiful surprise Nicole Eippers sent me from Belgium. Previously she has sent me beautiful weird existing animals. And now this first day cover, with an old world swallowtail! And of course the well-known 'Flying Pig' sticker. And inside of this envelope...

En aan de binnenkant van de vleugels deze heel ware spreuk: "Mail art - er is slechts een postzegel die ons scheidt".

Inside the wings you can read this true quote: "Mail art - there's only a stamp separating us".

Er is Post

De meeste postcrossers willen èn sturen 'prefab' kaarten.
Gelukkig zijn er ook postcrossers die zelf kaarten maken. En vandaag was ik weer een gelukkige ontvanger. Die 'minimal art' vogels vind ik geweldig! Dankjewel, Martinique!

Most postcrossers request and send 'prefab' postcards.
Fortunately some postcrossers make cards themselves. Today I was a lucky receiver. Watch these 'minimal art' birds! Thank you very much, Martinique!

ATC (1)

Wat het nut is van ATC-kaarten en waarom er zo veel over te doen lijkt te zijn, heb ik me lange tijd afgevraagd. Ze hebben bovendien een onhandig formaat: 6,4 x 8,9 cm, terwijl de blanco visitekaartjes in 't voor dit doel aangeschafte pakje 6 x 10 cm blijken zijn (ai, past nèt niet!).
Maar toch... Eenmaal bezig, heeft 't wel wat. En de eerste vier zijn af! Een serie, speciaal gemaakt voor een Postcrosser die blijkbaar van boeken, chocola, rozen, vlinders, blauw, turquoise, groen en tijgers houdt.

Uit dit aardige artikel leer ik dat het idee voor deze Artist Trading Cards komt van een Zwitser, die kaartjes maakte in plaats van een catalogus. En dat ATC vergelijkbare principes kent als Mail Art (zoals 'no fee', en het contacten leggen). Bovendien nemen de kaartjes weinig ruimte in, en dat is voor een kleinbehuisd iemand als ik een groot voordeel.
Het op het goede formaat knippen blijkt ook een leuke bezigheid.

During a long time I was wondering what would be the sense of ATC's. And I wondered why so many people seemed to be involved with it. The size of these cards turned out to be extremely unhandy to me: 6,4 x 8,9 cms (2.5 x 3.5 inch), as the blanc cards in the packet I especially bought for this purpose, appeared to be 6 x 10 cms...

There was a reason to make some, and while creating I discovered having fun making these. So the first one is ready! A serie of four, made for a Postcrosser who seems to like books, chocolat, roses, butterflies, blue, turquoise and green, and tigers. Hope she'll appreciate these ATCs.

Meanwhile I learned that the Suiss artist M. Vänçi Stirnemann started with these Artist Trading Cards in 1996, and there are similarities to Mail Art.
An advantage to me is that they're small, so they fit in my too small home. Cutting paper to the right size turns out to be a nice job, too.
