Het thema van 'Mail a Smile' van vorige maand was 'het favoriete boek uit je kindertijd'.
De brief voor de Koning van Tonke Dragt las ik zo rond m'n 12e. En herlas ik twee jaar geleden, en het blijft een prachtig boek. Over vriendschap, over moed, authenticiteit en twijfel, over loyaliteit en rivaliteit. Kortom: over de mens.
Bovenstaande illustratie heb ik nagetekend van de voorkant van 'onze' versie (het boek dat ik las in de jaren zeventig), inmiddels zijn er nieuwe uitgaven verschenen met nieuwe omslagontwerpen. Pas na vele jaren kwam ik er achter dat Tonke Dragt niet alleen het prachtige verhaal had geschreven, maar ook zelf de tot de verbeelding sprekende illustraties gemaakt heeft.

The Mail a Smile challenge of July was 'Your favorite childhood book'.
The letter for the King by Tonke Dragt I read when I was about 12 years old. I re-read it two years ago, and still think it a wonderful book. About friendship, about courage, authenticity and uncertainty, about loyalty and rivalry. In brief: about human.
The illustration above I drew after the cover of the first version we had (which I read in the seventies). Not before many years later I learned that Tonke Dragt not only had written this beautiful story, but that she also has made the imagination-capturing illustrations to the book.

'n Bloemetje

Mariana Serban heeft me verwend met vele en bijzondere stukken mail art, voor het 'Your Doctor in Mail Art' project en voor het 'Our Solitudes' mail art project, waarvoor ik onlangs zelfs prachtige werken van haar studenten ontving.
Helaas ben ik zelf een behoorlijk langzame mail art maker (door ook ander werk n gezin die mijn tijd opslurpen). Hoe dan ook, het werd hoog tijd voor een eerste bedankje, in de vorm van een bloemetje.

Alas I'm a far more slow creator (due to an other job and family life which absorb most of my time). Anyhow, here it is finally, my first reply in the form of a bunch of flowers.

Trees and songbirds

Een boom naar Nijmegen en een boom naar Zweden.

One tree sent to the city of Nijmegen in the Netherlands, and one to the city of Vaxholm in Sweden.

A piece of wood

Officieel te smal volgens de normen van de post (minimum 9x14 cm, en deze is zo breed als een postzegel), maar wie weet komt het gewoon aan. Gestuurd naar Mary in Amerika, in het kader van 'odd shaped postcards'.



As broad as a postage stamp, this postcard is less than 9 cms. So it's far too small according to the Post's rules. However I expect it to arrive well in the USA.
