Het thema van 'Mail a Smile' van vorige maand was 'het favoriete boek uit je kindertijd'.
De brief voor de Koning van Tonke Dragt las ik zo rond m'n 12e. En herlas ik twee jaar geleden, en het blijft een prachtig boek. Over vriendschap, over moed, authenticiteit en twijfel, over loyaliteit en rivaliteit. Kortom: over de mens.
Bovenstaande illustratie heb ik nagetekend van de voorkant van 'onze' versie (het boek dat ik las in de jaren zeventig), inmiddels zijn er nieuwe uitgaven verschenen met nieuwe omslagontwerpen. Pas na vele jaren kwam ik er achter dat Tonke Dragt niet alleen het prachtige verhaal had geschreven, maar ook zelf de tot de verbeelding sprekende illustraties gemaakt heeft.

The Mail a Smile challenge of July was 'Your favorite childhood book'.
The letter for the King by Tonke Dragt I read when I was about 12 years old. I re-read it two years ago, and still think it a wonderful book. About friendship, about courage, authenticity and uncertainty, about loyalty and rivalry. In brief: about human.
The illustration above I drew after the cover of the first version we had (which I read in the seventies). Not before many years later I learned that Tonke Dragt not only had written this beautiful story, but that she also has made the imagination-capturing illustrations to the book.

Boek! Book!

Als je geen uitgever hebt, en 'eigen beheer'-uitgeverijen te hoog gegrepen zijn (met mail art maak je nu eenmaal al veel kosten en verdien je - 'no fee' - geen cent), en je toch je weggestuurde mail art eens in 'n boek wilt terugzien, dan zijn er ook andere manieren. Namelijk doen of je digitale kopieën foto's zijn, en gebruik maken van een fotoboek-service.
Omdat ik maar weinig tijd en gelegenheid had om nieuw werk te maken, kon ik in een verloren, of eigenlijk gewonnen, uurtje toch iets maken: mijn eerste Mail Art Boek!
In een heel kleine oplage, full colour op echt papier, gebonden en harde kaft nog wel. En ook (tijdelijk?) te zien via dit online fotoalbum.

When you don't have a publisher and self-publishing companies too expensive for a full colour book (mail art makes 'no fee' and costs can be high), and you want to see your sent your mail art work back again in a book, then there are other ways to do so, like photobook services.
In the last weeks/months I had little time to create mail art. Yet in a 'lost' hour, I took the time to create it: my very first Mail Art Book!
In a very small quantity, full colour on real paper, bound and even hardcover.

De kaart was wel wat vertraagd. Nooit geweten dat breien met breispelden zovel méér tijd kost dan breien met breinaalden!..

After all the card was delayed. Never realized that knitting with knitting pins would take so much more time than knitting with knitting needles!..

The Parrot

De potloodschets bleef te lang liggen en was uiteindelijk te laat voor het Nick Bantock mail art project. Dus maar afgemaakt op de vertrouwde manier en in rood en zwart om naar Frankrijk te sturen.

The pencil sketch was ready but it took many months to be finished with pen and colour. Finally too late for the Nick Bantock mail art project. So I finished it my own way, and in red and black to send this Parrot to France.

(De mooiste prijs is natuurlijk een plaatsje tussen alle mail art kunstenaars op de eregalerij van "E"!) (The best, coolest prize of course is to get room between all mail artists on the gallery of honour of Utopia's Embassador, "E"!)

ATC (1)

Wat het nut is van ATC-kaarten en waarom er zo veel over te doen lijkt te zijn, heb ik me lange tijd afgevraagd. Ze hebben bovendien een onhandig formaat: 6,4 x 8,9 cm, terwijl de blanco visitekaartjes in 't voor dit doel aangeschafte pakje 6 x 10 cm blijken zijn (ai, past nèt niet!).
Maar toch... Eenmaal bezig, heeft 't wel wat. En de eerste vier zijn af! Een serie, speciaal gemaakt voor een Postcrosser die blijkbaar van boeken, chocola, rozen, vlinders, blauw, turquoise, groen en tijgers houdt.

Uit dit aardige artikel leer ik dat het idee voor deze Artist Trading Cards komt van een Zwitser, die kaartjes maakte in plaats van een catalogus. En dat ATC vergelijkbare principes kent als Mail Art (zoals 'no fee', en het contacten leggen). Bovendien nemen de kaartjes weinig ruimte in, en dat is voor een kleinbehuisd iemand als ik een groot voordeel.
Het op het goede formaat knippen blijkt ook een leuke bezigheid.

Hier wat werk van M. Vänçi Stirnemann, die er in 1996 mee begon.


During a long time I was wondering what would be the sense of ATC's. And I wondered why so many people seemed to be involved with it. The size of these cards turned out to be extremely unhandy to me: 6,4 x 8,9 cms (2.5 x 3.5 inch), as the blanc cards in the packet I especially bought for this purpose, appeared to be 6 x 10 cms...

There was a reason to make some, and while creating I discovered having fun making these. So the first one is ready! A serie of four, made for a Postcrosser who seems to like books, chocolat, roses, butterflies, blue, turquoise and green, and tigers. Hope she'll appreciate these ATCs.

Meanwhile I learned that the Suiss artist M. Vänçi Stirnemann started with these Artist Trading Cards in 1996, and there are similarities to Mail Art.
An advantage to me is that they're small, so they fit in my too small home. Cutting paper to the right size turns out to be a nice job, too.

Over 'Mail Art' is van alles gepubliceerd. Om meer te weten te komen over de achtergronden van de IUOMA (de International Union Of Mail-Artists) en over Mail Art, geeft dit - zwart-wit geïllustreerde - 165 pagina's tellende boek een aardig overzicht.

There has been written a lot about Mail Art. To know more about the IUOMA (the International Union Of Mail-Artists) and about Mail Art, this 165 pages long b&w booklet gives a nice overview.



Na lezing kon ik niet anders dan fan worden!
En met ingang van vandaag ben ik ook aangesteld als creatief adviseur van de IUOMA.

After reading this I couldn't do anything else than becoming a Fan!
And since today my new title is Creative Advisor of the IUOMA.
