Ik heb eerder een neushoorn voor Ryosuke getekend. En weer besef ik tijdens het tekenen hoe kwetsbaar dit grote dier is, tegenover de mens.
'Alles van waarde is weerloos', schoot me te binnen, en voegde ik toe, de beroemde uitspraak van Lucebert.

I've created a Rhinoceros for Ryosuke before.
And again this impressive animal reminds me of the vulnerability of animals who are facing mankind.
'Alles van waarde is weerloos', in English: 'All things of value are defenseless' is a quote by the late Dutch poet/artist Lucebert. While drawing, this quote came into my mind and I added it.



Als 'postzegel' een neushoorn-stempel uit een gum gesneden.

As a postage 'stamp' I decided to carve a rhinoceros rubber stamp.

Multilingual Vlinder

Het woord 'vlinder' is in veel talen totaal anders. Erg interessant, volgens mij, vandaar deze multilinguale versie.
Gemaakt voor Gin, oprichtster van de IUOMA-groep 'Verenigde Veeltaligen' en net als ik (en meer mensen) taal-liefhebber.

The word 'butterfly' is varying a lot when translated. I think it interesting how this insect is called in various languages. So that's why this multilingual butterfly appeared.
Made for Gin, founder of the IUOMA group 'Polyglots United', and language lover (as I and more people are).

Een zangvogel - de stem als instrument. Oftewel mijn interpretatie van het nieuwe Mail a Smile onderwerp: een muziekinstrument bespelen. Voor wie de 'stem' geen muziekinstrument vindt: op de postzegel staat een ander instrument!

Dit weekend nog meer muziek. Dankzij Eva's blogbericht ontdekte ik de website van Anke. En omdat zij sleutels blijkt te sparen, kon ik het niet laten om onderstaande tekening voor haar te maken. Helaas kon ik haar geen echte sleutel sturen, de meeste gebruik ik gewoon, en eentje zit vast... aan een gitaarspelend kleipoppetje.

This weekend I created another musical instrument. Thanks to Eva's blog post I discovered Anke's website 'Snail Mail Magazine'. When I found out that Anke collects keys, I couldn't resist drawing this guitar player to send to her. Alas I couldn't send her a real key, because most of my keys I'm using to open doors, and the un-used one has been sticked to a guitar playing clay puppet...

Mail a Smile Challenge #2

Vorige maand deed ik voor 't eerst mee aan het 'Stuur een glimlach' mail art project. Het tweede onderwerp is 'Een kop thee of koffie', gekozen door Eva. Hierboven een vilten kopje thee (met echte, geurige thee erachter, de techniek is nog niet zo ver dat ik die essence ook kan publiceren!). Hieronder thee- èn koffiekopjes, en daaronder een collage van de postzegels.
Nog drie dagen te gaan; wil je ook meedoen en Micu's Moeder een hart onder de riem steken, meld je snel aan bij Mail a Smile!



Last month I participated in the first Mail a Smile challenge. The second challenge's theme is 'A cup of tea or coffee', chosen by Eva.
Above on top you see a felt cup of tea (with real tea bags behind it; computer technology hasn't developed that far yet: I cannot publish the smell of tea!).
Just above some tea and coffee cups, and below you see a collage of the stamps I made / sticked.

In december 2011 ontving ik onderstaand verzoek, met die prachtige envelop en daarin nog allerlei efemera, van Adamandia Kapsalis. Zie hierboven voor mijn antwoord. Een jaar en een week later...
Het is voor het TV mail art project van Adamandia Kapsalis. Televisie, daar kun je veel mee doen. Maar hoe ik het ook wendde of keerde, op de een of andere manier komen er steeds maar weer vissen in beeld.

It's my contribution to Adamandia's TV mail art project. The subject 'Television' of course offers unlimited inspiration. But suddenly fish arrived on the tv-screen, and I couldn't help sending fish to Adamandia.

Een grote verrassing in mijn brievenbus. Dankjewel, Botje!
Ik heb dagen nodig gehad om te bedenken hoe ik deze kaart in dit digitale medium kon laten zien.
Want van welke kant je de voorzijde ook bekijkt, hij is steeds weer anders. En als je schudt, verandert 't wéér!
Daarom hieronder ook een vierluik, waarin je verschillende van die prachtige faux postage postzegels kunt zien. En dat in één kaart!



A big surprise in my mailbox, made and sent by Botje from Wageningen, the Netherlands.
It took many days for me to publish this postcard, as I had to think a lot about the way I would do so. Because from every side seen, the card is different. And when you shake the card, it changes again!
So above I made a triptych (plus one), so you can see various of the great artistamps. Which were gathered in one postcard!

Ik loop behoorlijk achter met m'n post. Van deze drie prachtig bestempelde en bepostzegelde enveloppen geniet ik al sinds september (2011!) en nú pas zijn ze hier te zien. Kijk ook naar de twee 'faux postage' zegels van de Republiek van het Hart. Binnenin een bijzondere kaart: gehaakt en gewoven! Gemaakt en verstuurd door Thom Courcelle vanuit Seattle, als antwoord op mijn mini-breiwerk.

I'm much behind handling my mail. These beautifully stamped envelopes I'm enjoying already since September (2011!). And not earlier than now I'm able to show them here (and to thank Thom). See also the two cinderella stamps of the République du Coeur, the Heart's Republic.

De elfde van de elfde in het jaar elf... Terwijl de kinderen 'Sint Maarten' lopen, wordt binnenshuis kunst gemaakt. En ik ben de gelukkige ontvanger! Dankjewel, Annemiek!

The 'elfde van de elfde in het jaar elf' / the eleventh of the eleventh in the year eleven (as in Dutch the word 'elf' means both 'elf' and 'eleven')...
While children are 'walking Sint Maarten' outside, inside the house mail art is made. And I'm the lucky receiver.

Tja, en als je geen tijd hebt om te tekenen, zijn er gelukkig nog oude tekeningen, en een computerprogramma om zo'n tekening in geen tijd tot 150 postzegels om te toveren.

When you are too busy with other things and don't have the opportunity to draw because of that, fortunately some old designs are archieved, and there is a computer programma to turn one of those designs into 150 artistamps in no time!

Postcrossend huisdier

Onze buren een eindje verderop hadden een puppy. Inmiddels is het geen puppy meer en heeft hij zich ontwikkeld tot een wonderlijke viervoeter. Het blijkt een bulldog te zijn!
Ik had me nooit zo in deze soort honden verdiept, maar nu een postcrosser in zijn profiel aangaf bulldogs leuk te vinden, toch eens deze verder bestudeerd. En het blijft een wonderlijke hond. (Hopelijk tekent/schildert iemand 'm eens voor het Wonderlijke Dieren mail art project.)

Our neighbours, some houses further on, had a puppy. Now, months later, the puppy is no longer a puppy, but has developed into a weird, amazing four-footer. He appears to be a bulldog!
Never before I had watched these animals that closely, until I read a postcrosser mentioned bulldogs in his profile, so I made a study on them. It indeed is an amazing animal. (Hopefully someone else will draw/paint 'm for the Odd Existing Animals mail art project.)

Footsteps in the snow

De eerste artistamps gaan vandaag op de brievenbus: naar Japan!
Uiteindelijk met de hand geperforeerd, de randjes van de benodigde 150 postzegels.
Hierboven de begeleidende ansichtkaart, hieronder de bij deze kaart behorende postzegel.

And the first artistamps are ready to be sent to Japan!
After all hand perforating seemed to be the quickest way to make the needed 150 seals.

Mijn allereerste arti-postzegelvel! Wel nog even bedenken hoe ik alle randen 't gemakkelijkst perforeren kan (anders wordt 't met de hand)...
Een eerbetoon aan de Braziliaanse zanger/componist/muzikant Milton Nascimento.
De originele afbeelding maakte ik alweer járen geleden met aquarel en pen. Grappig om te zien hoe de herhaling, in zo'n postzegelvel, een beeld weer heel anders maakt.

My very first artistamps sheet! Now solving the 'problem' of how to perforate the stamp edges in a an easy way (alternatively I could do it by hand)...
A tribute to the Brazilian singer/composer/musician Milton Nascimento.
The original image (mixed media: watercolour and pen) I made many years ago. Funny to see that repetition, inherent in stamp sheets, does change such a single image a lot!

Received from Tic Tac

I have been drawing postage stamps since I started sending mail, because drawing/painting is my life and such a piece of faux postage makes mail more personal.

Several months ago Tic Tac sent me this artistamps sheet.
And it was the very first time I got a Real Artistamps Sheet in my hands. Not knowing that artistamps are a phenomenon already for ages and many mail artists are creating them.



There is a lot to see in these 24 winks stamps. When I received them, I only saw the flowers (as I was distracted and touched by the beautifully rubber-stamped envelop, too). But looking more closely now I see: there is also beauty-in-the-eye!
