Een mooie verrassing ontving ik van Nicole Eippers uit België. Zij stuurde me al eerder prachtige wonderlijke bestaande dieren. En nu deze eerste-dag-envelop, met een koninginnenpage! En natuurlijk de onvolprezen 'Flying Pig' zegel erop. En binnenin deze envelop...

A beautiful surprise Nicole Eippers sent me from Belgium. Previously she has sent me beautiful weird existing animals. And now this first day cover, with an old world swallowtail! And of course the well-known 'Flying Pig' sticker. And inside of this envelope...

One Pig flew over the Postcard

Eindelijk weer tijd gevonden om deze kaart af te maken, voor Nicole's Piggy One Mailart blog.

Finally found some time to finish this card for Nicole, owner of the Piggy One Mailart blog.


(Over boerderijdieren gesproken: eindelijk een goede bestemming gevonden voor de Europees gevlekte koe (gulden) postzegel!
Concerning farm animals: at last I found a good destination for the European-spotted Dutch cow stamp!)

De wolf en de drie biggetjes

Als kind zag ik sprookjes als normale kinderverhalen. Pas nu merk ik hoeveel wreeds er in die 'onschuldige' sprookjes huist.
Dus... Wat anders te doen dan de wolf en drie biggetjes gebroederlijk bij elkaar tekenen?

As a child I thought fairytales were normal stories. Now I'm a little older I realize how much cruelty is in these 'innocent' stories.
So... What else to do than draw the wolf and the three little pigs amicably together?

ATC (1)

Wat het nut is van ATC-kaarten en waarom er zo veel over te doen lijkt te zijn, heb ik me lange tijd afgevraagd. Ze hebben bovendien een onhandig formaat: 6,4 x 8,9 cm, terwijl de blanco visitekaartjes in 't voor dit doel aangeschafte pakje 6 x 10 cm blijken zijn (ai, past nèt niet!).
Maar toch... Eenmaal bezig, heeft 't wel wat. En de eerste vier zijn af! Een serie, speciaal gemaakt voor een Postcrosser die blijkbaar van boeken, chocola, rozen, vlinders, blauw, turquoise, groen en tijgers houdt.

Uit dit aardige artikel leer ik dat het idee voor deze Artist Trading Cards komt van een Zwitser, die kaartjes maakte in plaats van een catalogus. En dat ATC vergelijkbare principes kent als Mail Art (zoals 'no fee', en het contacten leggen). Bovendien nemen de kaartjes weinig ruimte in, en dat is voor een kleinbehuisd iemand als ik een groot voordeel.
Het op het goede formaat knippen blijkt ook een leuke bezigheid.

Hier wat werk van M. Vänçi Stirnemann, die er in 1996 mee begon.


During a long time I was wondering what would be the sense of ATC's. And I wondered why so many people seemed to be involved with it. The size of these cards turned out to be extremely unhandy to me: 6,4 x 8,9 cms (2.5 x 3.5 inch), as the blanc cards in the packet I especially bought for this purpose, appeared to be 6 x 10 cms...

There was a reason to make some, and while creating I discovered having fun making these. So the first one is ready! A serie of four, made for a Postcrosser who seems to like books, chocolat, roses, butterflies, blue, turquoise and green, and tigers. Hope she'll appreciate these ATCs.

Meanwhile I learned that the Suiss artist M. Vänçi Stirnemann started with these Artist Trading Cards in 1996, and there are similarities to Mail Art.
An advantage to me is that they're small, so they fit in my too small home. Cutting paper to the right size turns out to be a nice job, too.

En de door kinderen gemaakte dieren waren niet de enige!
Een leuk 'add and return' mail art project met jonge kunstenaars is het project van Kathy De Wit uit Antwerpen.
De oproep voor haar mail art project kwam ik tegen op het forum van de IUOMA. Met veel genoegen voegde ik onze flat toe aan Nesta's huis. Met nog wat erbij, maar die staan niet op de foto. Zodra Nesta deze ontvangen heeft zal de rest ook onthuld worden.

A nice add-and-return mail art project with young artist involved is the project of Kathy De Wit from Antwerp (Belgium).
I read the call for entries on the IUOMA network forum, and am happy to finally have been able to add our flat to Nesta's house. With some more added, but that's not in this picture. To reveal as soon as Nesta will have received it.

Zo rond mijn 14e begon mijn loopbaan in de mail art. Al had ik toen nog nooit gehoord van deze stroming. Een vriendin en ik stuurden elkaar per post wel eens brieven met een volgetekende envelop. We waren klasgenoten, dus eigenlijk zou 't sneller gaan als we elkaar onze post gewoon overhandigden. Maar ja, die 'echte' post had wel wat.
Eén 'project', waarbij we het onderdeel 'mail' ten volle benutten, was de ansichtkaart die we gezamenlijk volschreven, en die we voorzagen van ons beider adres en een postzegel. Vervolgens op de bus deden, benieuwd bij wie van ons twee de postbode de kaart in de bus zou doen. Ik was de gelukkige ontvanger.
Achteraf is 't jammer dat ik die kaart (waarschijnlijk) nooit bewaard heb, want het was een persoonlijk 'collector's item' geweest. Tja, zo gaat dat, zelfs analoge post kan vluchtig zijn.

Goed, over naar de 21e eeuw. Inmiddels zijn er verschillende kinderen die al jong met het fenomeen 'mail art' kennismaken, dankzij een alerte leerkracht op school of tekenclub. Op het IUOMA forum is dan ook een onderdeel 'Kids & Mail art', en Andy van My Real Wall opende deze website voor scholen om hun mail art projecten uit te wisselen.

Herfst vorig jaar werd ik benaderd door Greet van 't Frank Model, naar aanleiding van mijn project over bestaande wonderlijke dieren, met de vraag of haar pupillen een dier konden insturen en of ik dan iets terugstuurde. Daar ging ik graag op in!
Alleen heeft het bij mij wel de nodige vertraging gehad (excuses, Greet), maar hier zijn ze dan, de eerste van de beloofde kaarten voor drie van de zes kinderen die toen hun bijdrage aan Real Weird Animals leverden! Eigenlijk is het een soort 'voeg toe en stuur terug' geworden, maar dan met behoud - en koesteren - van het origineel.
De andere drie volgen zeer binnenkort.

My own carreer in Mail Art began when I was about 14 years old, although I had never heard of that name in those days. A friend and I sometimes sent eachother mail, in a 'decorated' envelop. We were classmates so basically it would have been faster to just hand our post. Though the 'real post' was appealing.
A 'project' in which we fully made use of the phenomenon 'post', was a single postcard, which we completed and on which we added both our addresses and a stamp, and put it into the letterbox. And then waiting, wondering to whom of us the postman would bring it. I was the lucky recipient. It's a pity I never preserved this card (I think), for now it would have been my personal 'collector's item'. Well, even analogous post may be temporary...

Back to the 21st century. Nowadays several children deliberately are exposed to Mail Art, thanks to their teachers, at school or a club.
At the IUOMA forum there's a 'Kids & Mail Art' topic. And Andy from My Real Wall started this website for school teachers to exchange their mail art projects.

Last autumn I received an email from Greet from 't Frank Model, as a response to my project on Real Weird Animals, asking if I'd appreciate to receive animals made by her pupils and then send something back to them. I gladly accepted.
And with some delay, now the first three (of six) postcards are sent to the kids, you can see the results (and links to the kid's own mail art works) above. Actually it turned out to be a kind of 'add and return', with keeping - and cherishing - the originals.
The other three postcards will come up soon.
