The revenge of the Trees

It is autumn, time to finish the mixed media mail art I started to create many months ago. The tree leave I used, had fallen from its tree in one of the previous autumns.
A lot of Trees have been murdered recently, both in my neighbourhood and close to my work. It makes me angry and sad, however I'm finding a little comfort in the fact that nature (hopefully) will 'win' in a way, after all.

I hope the receiver won't get too sad by this scenery, so I thought to paint the envelope in bright orange colours and to add a friendly hedgehog.

They did it again...

This time a mass tree slaughter in a neighbouring city...
I can't understand why the local authorities cut down so many trees - living lungs! - in our polluted urbanized motorwayful region...

Sent to Ryosuke Cohen. Hope this Tribute to the Trees will raise a little bit of awareness. Probably the authorities will stay deaf and don't care about biodiversity and our future generations' health...

Malerwinkelhaus

Thanks to Eva I learned about the Malerwinkelhaus mail art project.

The wooden frames of the Malerwinkel-house reminded me of a famous architect: the spider!
And inspired me to create this version of the Malerwinkelhaus:

Walnut Tree

Het mail art project is gebaseerd op een prachtig (en alarmerend) gedicht van Nâzım Hikmet, zie onder, en zie ook de mail art call.

This project is based on a beautiful (and alarming!) poem called “Walnut Tree”, by Nâzım Hikmet*:

"Yes, walnut tree is watching us. Is looking at what we do, with a shock in its eyes…
Because...
We doomed our cities to purely concrete squares, treeless streets and soilless parks.
Air is polluted, water is polluted... Fish have gone away; migratory birds are endangered; our dogs and cats are enslaved.
We have forgotten to produce... System has identified all of us as “consumers”, and while we are consuming lavishly, garbage mountains are encircling us mischievously.
And we are destroying the future of our children.
Hasn’t time come to say a “stop” thereto?
Come on. Let’s think over not a moment too soon. Where did we made a mistake? And what should we do from now on?
And let’s lend an ear to the Walnut Tree..."

Project 'Sustainability'

Voor het mail art project van Pâmela Teles uit Brazilië: 'duurzaamheid in jouw stad'.
't Was best lastig om iets te bedenken. Ja, in mijn woonplaats wordt glas, papier en gft-afval gescheiden ingezameld, en ook plastic afval inzamelen gebeurt (eerder zelfs dan in de grote buurgemeente).
Maar verder... De bestuurders pretenderen dat we een 'groene stad' hebben. Maar met grote voortvarendheid, en onder flauwe voorwendselen, kappen ze volop bomen, in plaats deze te onderhouden (zie deze foto's van een massaslachting).

Maar wat wel mooi is, in mijn stad, is de grote hoeveelheid fietspaden. Niet alleen in onze stad, natuurlijk. En we hebben de fietspaden niet zozeer te danken aan de stadsbestuurders zelf (die willen liever uitbreiding van wegen en koopcentra), maar aan de stadsregio en het rijk.

It was difficult to think of a subject. Yes, there is separate collection of waste (glass, paper, green waste), and they started to collect plastic waste earlier than our neighbouring big city.
However, the local authorities pretend we have a 'green city', but meanwhile they cut down hundreds of trees, instead of maintaining them (see these pictures of a mass slaughter three years ago).

One good thing, concerning sustainability, is the fact that there are a lot of bicycle pathways in our city. Well, that is fact in most parts of the Netherlands. And it's not because of our local authorities (they prefer to expand highways and shopping centers), but thanks to the regional authorities and national money.

Ik heb wel eens eerder mail art getekend over het onderwerp. De ontvangers van de 'October challenge' van Mail a Smile inspireerden me om het nog eens dunnetjes over te doen.
Al ben ik een beetje laat met versturen (oktober is alweer lang en breed voorbij), ik hoop dat Lilly en het No Impact Team deze tekening kunnen gebruiken.

I have created mail art before about the subject. The receivers of the October challenge of Mail a Smile inspired me to make one more.
However I am a little late in sending (october almost has been forgotten already), but I hope that Lilly and the No Impact Team can use this mail art.

Tiuri

Het thema van 'Mail a Smile' van vorige maand was 'het favoriete boek uit je kindertijd'.
De brief voor de Koning van Tonke Dragt las ik zo rond m'n 12e. En herlas ik twee jaar geleden, en het blijft een prachtig boek. Over vriendschap, over moed, authenticiteit en twijfel, over loyaliteit en rivaliteit. Kortom: over de mens.
Bovenstaande illustratie heb ik nagetekend van de voorkant van 'onze' versie (het boek dat ik las in de jaren zeventig), inmiddels zijn er nieuwe uitgaven verschenen met nieuwe omslagontwerpen. Pas na vele jaren kwam ik er achter dat Tonke Dragt niet alleen het prachtige verhaal had geschreven, maar ook zelf de tot de verbeelding sprekende illustraties gemaakt heeft.

The Mail a Smile challenge of July was 'Your favorite childhood book'.
The letter for the King by Tonke Dragt I read when I was about 12 years old. I re-read it two years ago, and still think it a wonderful book. About friendship, about courage, authenticity and uncertainty, about loyalty and rivalry. In brief: about human.
The illustration above I drew after the cover of the first version we had (which I read in the seventies). Not before many years later I learned that Tonke Dragt not only had written this beautiful story, but that she also has made the imagination-capturing illustrations to the book.

Purple Pepper Lego

Wat te doen als iemand de naam 'Purple Pepper Design' voert en ook nog van Lego houdt? Juist, alle lego bij elkaar zoeken en een paarse peper bouwen. Het idee is niet nieuw, maar dat geeft niet, lego blijft leuk!
Gemaakt voor Sarah Churchill. Zij heeft een leerzaam filmpje over mail art gemaakt, en meer films, waaronder deze prachtige 'collage' van de mail art die zij voor haar verjaardag kreeg.

What to do when someone uses the name 'Purple Pepper Design' and loves Lego? Right, gather all lego in da house and build a purple pepper. The idea isn't new, but that doesn't matter, lego always is fun!

Dieren tekenen vind ik erg leuk, en ik hou er ook van om voor mensen hun favoriete dier te tekenen. Dus toen Kerosene desgevraagd antwoordde dat een zwarte panter ooit haar favoriet was, kwam bovenstaande uit mijn pen en penseel rollen. Misschien toch niet de panter die zij bedoeld had?!?

I love to draw animals, and I like to draw people's favourite animal. So when I asked and Kerosene answered that the black panter used to be her favourite, this black panter appeared on my paper. It might not be the one she meant?!?

Songbird in tree and butterflies

Geïnspireerd door Katerina's gele vlinders op Brain Cell 855 voegde ik gele vlinders toe aan deze 'Zangvogel in boom'. (In het echt zijn ze geel, maar de scanner maakte ze ineens oranje...)

Inspired by Katerina's yellow butterflies on Brain Cell 855, I added yellow butterflies to this 'Songbird in tree'. (In real the butterflies are really yellow, but the scanner somehow made them orange...)

Woodland Animals

Dankzij Eva ontdekte ik een nieuw mail art project: 'Stuur een glimlach'!
Bedacht door Micu uit Boedapest en Jennie uit Stockholm, met als doel om mensen in nood een glimlach te bezorgen, door ook zelf creatief bezig te zijn met envelop en brief (of kaart, in mijn geval).

Thanks to Eva I discovered a new mail art project: 'Mail a Smile'!
It was started by Micu from Budapest (Hungary) and Jennie from Stockholm (Sweden), with the aim to send smiles to people in need, by being creative ourselves by decorating envelopes and letters (or a card, in my case).



Je kan zelf een glimlach bedenken, of je laten inspireren door een bepaald thema, deze keer 'Woodland animals'. Wat ik in eerste instantie vertaalde als diertjes die in hout leven, maar na wat googlen bedacht ik dat het gewoon bosdieren zullen zijn.

You can think of a 'smile' piece of mail art, or, better, have yourself inspired by the actual theme. The theme of the first 'challenge' is Woodland Animals. I first thought that it would mean 'animals living in wood', but later I realized that these might be all animals living in the woods (forest, 'bos' in Dutch). So I'll send this one, too.

Door alle drukte buiten 't mail art gebeuren om kwam ik er maar niet aan toe om alle dierbare mail art collega's een gelukkig nieuw jaar toe te wensen.

Eindelijk mijn antwoord op die prachtige illustratie die ik van Suus in Mokum ontving.
Rechtsboven 'Mail snail 2', linksboven mijn reaktie op het verzoek op Suus' envelop.

Finally I finished and sent my reply to the beautiful illustration which I received from Suus in Mokum, eight months ago.
Above on the right you can see 'Mail Snail 2', and on the left my answer to the request Suus wrote on her envelope (see below, translated freely: the varnish interacted with the paint, obviously a good reason to request to see the manager :-)
